Welcome to the New Ways of Working Website

NWW has formed a significant part of the NIMHE National Workforce Programme since it started in January 2003.

NWW is about changing the practice of the current workforce; developing extended roles beyond the scope of current professional practice and bringing in new people to the workforce in new roles, at assistant and practitioner levels. There is no single

model for NWW; it is simply about making the best use of the skills in the workforce to meet need in a cost effective way.

There has been great enthusiasm shown by Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Allied Health Professions, Pharmacists, Nurses and Primary Care in exploring what NWW means for them, and more importantly, what it means for people who use mental health services and for their families and supporters.

We published our interim report in 2004 and our final report on NWW for Psychiatrists in October 2005. But this has never been just about psychiatrists; it has been a multi-disciplinary process throughout. Our most recent production - 'NWW for Everyone' makes this explicit.  Following the publication of this report we have produced a NWW for Everyone Best Practice Implementation Guide which will be published in October 2007.  Please also see the Strategic Summary.

This website is where the products of all of the professional workstreams are made available.  Although we have worked with each professional group in mental health in order to engage and learn from them, the direction of travel has been the same for all: to develop teams and services based on the capabilities required to meet service user and carer needs, rather than based on a profession. There is no doubt that this poses challenges for all, as it does mean a real shift in culture, custom and practice.

We have produced the 'Creating Capable Teams Approach', to help make this happen in reality.  We have already started working with facilitators to familiarise them with the CCTA materials; and a new discussion forum is now available for them to share their experiences of using CCTA in multidisciplinary teams.  The Toolkit is now available here.

Reports about NWW for Applied Psychologists are being added this month including:

  • Positive Practice Report on the Contribution of Psychologists in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies:  This is both a challenge and an opportunity for Psychologists.

We have also added a report from the NWW for Pharmacy, describing the Spread Programme of NWW for Pharmacists.

Barry Foley, Steve Humphries, Christine Vize and I have started running Collaborative Learning Sets for senior staff in Trusts to implement NWW strategically.  So far, they are running in the North West, North East, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands and Eastern SHAs, covering 31 Trusts.   If you work in London, South East and South West and want to explore this opportunity contact me roslyn.hope@csip.org.uk or Liz Edgar eedgar@cru.rcpsych.ac.uk. It is already clear that there is huge variation across Trusts and there is much to share.

We will be adding to the website and want you to help us in this, by sending us examples of local positive practice and by having a dialogue about the difficulties and opportunities it is presenting.  A good example of this is the development of the Virtual Ward, and the final report from Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust about their NWW within mental health services teams.
